Lucy;
First of all we are going to need to know the brand and model of your
cd rom. Also do you have and installation disk for it.
Your in a catch 22 right now in that you need PCMCIA drivers in order
to get the CD working and the CD needs to be working in order to load
the drivers.
There are a couple of cd drives that come with drivers that do not
require cards services. This is what you'll need. Otherwise you'll
need a LAN card that has direct drivers (some 3com noncardbus) or
you'll need to pull the harddrive and install the basic OS on another
computer. Unless you happen to have windows on 3.5" floppies
somewhere.

RAM etc. I want to run Debian purely.

was quite surprised when the kernel fell over, after an (all too
brief) glance at the web I located a couple of images from a japanese
ftp site that looked to be what i was after, they were debian 2.1
rescue disk and a driver disk specifically for librettos.

ok. My cdrom made pleasing noises when i did the "configure device
drivers module" after successfully loading the drivers floppy.

install, neither did my ethernet card show any signs of life for an
ftp install (i have adsl).Does it appear as an IDE /ATAPI drive - or
does it just mount it when it knows it's there. I'm a pcmcia newbie
you see. :(

subsequently thought it would be safer to do a recovery back to win98,
and download linux to a partition there as people have suggested.

since I trashed it's partitioning with my own, and it asks me how i
want to partition and then hangs...so no starting afresh it seems. :(
