Subject: Installing 30 :-)) GB Harddisk in Libretto 110.

Hi everyone,

A while ago I considered upgrading my 4 GB HD to 12 GB when this size
became available.... but I didn't....
When the 20 GB drives became available I considered upgrading again.... but
I didn't....

But then..... (drum roll)....... THE RETURN OF THE KILLER DRIVES!!!!.....
THEY MADE THEM 30 GB IN SIZE!!!!......

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!.......
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!........................

So I bought one.

It's okay...... Thanks for asking.... I am all right again now.... %)

But seriously folks..... These suckers are HUGE! nowadays.

Which brings me to the following points.
Over the time I have been reading a fair amount of threads about the issues
relating to upgrading to a drive > 8 GB and it has been discussed again
recently but I still have been left with a few unclear points.

1.
Some people have said that the 100/110 can take 9,5 mm drives without
modifications. But someone reported a malfunctioning keyboard resulting
from the pressure of the drive because he had not taken out the plastic
spacers.
I wonder whether these different opinions/experiences could result from the
fact that some of these machines were not factory-fitted with 8,5 mm drives
but with 9,5 mm drives (as I have read somewhere in the mail list
archives). These might not have had the plastic spacers to begin with
(anybody know this?) and so the owners of these machines logically presumed
that the L100/110 could take 9,5 mm drives without modifications.

I am now testing the drive (Partition Magic 5 is now halfway through the
creation process of the first 8 GB) and have experienced that it doesn't
feel right to leave the spacers in. I understand that there are five of
them (right?) but it is difficult to do this without removing the bottom
cover. When I remove the five screws the two parts do not yet come apart at
the rear of the unit. Currently I have temporarily fitted the drive by
leaving the screws loosened to allow the drive to fit. Can anyone tell me
how to best reach all the spacers/how to take the bottom cover off?

2.
From what I have read in earlier posting I understand that it should be
possible to use the > 8 GB part without the need for a software drive
manager. I understand it has been suggested that this would be possible
with utilities like the Linux equivalent of FDISK or Partition Magic 5 (by
the way... I have forgotten above which size the BIOS needs to support Int
13 extensions. Is this an issue with the Libretto110/with this size drive?).
Am I right in understanding that I first have to partition the first 8 GB
in my Libretto and that the BIOS automatically leaves space for hibernation
and that I then can partition the remainder in my desktop PC which will
then be used by the Libretto too? Is that correct and will the space for
the hibernation file be left intact in the desktop PC?

By the way.... Is this whole HD upgrade thingy with all the issues
described anywhere on the Web at some Libretto site? If so Does anyone know
the URL and if not shouldn't it be somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Ben Muller.
