It's the older L20-50 (maybe up to 70) models that will have this trouble,
and the L50owners have been the ones to note this problem.

The L100/110 models should be ready for 9.5mm HDs.

See exploded parts view on my site to see how it's put together. With the
L110 model, if the original HD is 9.5mm, then don't bother.

Er., best tried and true ways? Win2K or Linux. The other OSs will require a
drive manager program installed or else you'll think it's fine until you
hibernate and the 8GB limit gets written over.

In fact, even with linux, you'll have to make sure the 8GB limit is kept
unused or else it'll be overwritten - linux will see the entire 30GB fine
however. One guy tested this under linux and found this out for sure.
It's archived in the Mailing List archives.

Who knows with Win2K as nobody's posted a test one way or the other - you
should test to see where the hibration info is being written.

Way I've heard it from users that have tried is that the L100/110 can be
fooled to think it sees the entire >8GB HD, but they didn't test to see where
the hibernation partition goes. With the Linux guy writing back, it's at the
8GB partition and you'd better be careful because the BIOS apparently will drop
it there even if you see >8GB. Also, fooling the system (those not running
Win2K or Linux) into seeing >30GB using PMagic isn't the best idea because
although those who've done it sizing their HDs on their desktops seem like they
work, it'll probably barf or get the 8GB hibernation area overwritten someday
(these people mostly didn't do any testing of where the hibernation partition
went).

A brief talk in my FAQ on my site.

However, I'm waiting for more users to confirm one way or the other
definitely what happens with each model. Certainly, with the <L70 models,
you'll need a drive manager program. Given that one linux user tested and
found the 8GB area overwritten on the L1xx model, my recommendation is that if
you're not running the later 1xxx series or greater models, use an OS that's
partitioned around the 8GB that can also recognize the full 30GB directly (eg.
Win2K or Linux), or use a Drive manager program to be absolutely safe.

HOWEVER, even then, I have not heard from anybody one way or the other
whether the driver manager overlay program fools the libretto into putting the
hibernation partition at the end of the HD as is correct or at the 8GB limit.
So we don't know still what happens in this case.

   some do test and tell!!

   d =)
