Subject: Re: CT50 and 20G drives
As talked about in another thread (search Libretto Mailing List archives),
there are problems installing and running a >8GB HD in any Libretto L110 or
older. The BIOS does not natively support correct LBA mapping of >8GB HDs,
and as such, you have to use one of the options.
1) Install and use a disk manager program like Ontrack.com's or
www.storage.ibm.com's (latter only if you have an IBM HD). This will resolve
the problems and let you install anything you want.
Caveat! Nobody has tested and confirmed 100% sure that the hibernation area
is then correctly located at the end of the full HD, rather than at the end of
the 8.4GB boundary. (Will someone test and report back how they found out?)
2) Install and use Linux or Win2K, both of which bypass the BIOS and read the
HD geometry directly. With Linux, as posted earlier, two users have tested and
posted their results. The hibernation partition sits at the end of the 8.4GB
(or thereabouts), so you will need to create at least two partitions below and
above that area, leaving about 100-400MB of that area empty in case you don't
know the exact size of the hibernation space. (the Linux program posted in a
prior article can tell you - it'll blank out the space and find out where the
changes caused by hiberation data saved start and end)
With Win2K, prior users say it simply sees it all, but again, not one of
those users have tested 100% to make sure the hibernation partition is at the
end of the HD space rather than at the 8.4GB boundary ontop of their data.
(will someone test this and let us know?)
----------
Naturally, one of the easiest ways to check under DOS where the hibernation
partition is is to blank out the HD, hibernate the machine, then use a disk
sector editor to walk the HD sectors until you see changes.
In any case, good luck and let us know how it goes!
