Subject: Possible driver file conflicts w/combo modem on L70

Okay... here's my problem I'm having setting up this Xircom combo modem
(CEM56-100) on my L70.

First, I did establish that the modem does work by setting it up sucessfully
in my L50. There are 2 problems with the L70, no doubt releated.

First problem: The system shuts down during boot if the card is in the
system. I can insert it after boot, and the system will see it and let me
use it to make a dial-up connection successfully.

Second problem: After I insert the card, it conflicts with the system for a
while. The mouse won't work until I 'end task' on msgsrv32, or until the
system does that on its own. But I can't put in or remove any other PC
Cards while the Xircom modem is in. This problem goes away when I disable
(disable in this profile) the driver for the network adapter for it in
Device Manager. Which leads me to guess at the following.

I'm wondering if there might be a confict with an entry in the 'Network
Adapters' section 'Device Manager' that I can't delete. I can only see the
entry in 'Safe Mode'. It's an entry for a Megahertz combo that I couldn't
get going either. It can't be deleted. I get a message saying that it must
be removed with the 'parent device'. But that entry in 'Multi-function
devices' is gone, no doubt when I deleted the drivers for that Megahertz
modem. I don't have the modem or drivers anymore. I wonder if there is any
software that can clean up this entry.

I tried disabling that Megahertz driver in 'Safe Mode'. But the problem
persisted. I'm not sure if you can set the 'disable in this profile' option
in from Safe Mode, or if you have to boot into a profile first. Problem is,
without the original card inserted, you won't see the driver in a full boot
into Windows. None of my PC Card drivers appear there after a full boot to
W98 until I actually insert the card. That said, I only HAVE one profile.

But it's only a guess that this old Megahertz driver is the source of the
problem. It sure seems like it if disabling it make problem #2 above go
away. I suppose he problem could be with these files, or some files
relating to it that the L70 has and the L50 doesn't. BTW: The L70 has same
installation of W98 as the L50.

Another thing I thought odd was that Windows wants to set up the Xircom on
Com 5 on the L70 where the 2 other modems I've had got set up on Com 3. And
for some reason, Windows set up ALL of the modems successfully om Com 2,
albeit at differ times. They haven't been set up at the same time. I did
remove all the drivers for old modems on the L70 to try to get the Xircom
working... all but this Megahertz entry in 'Network adapters'.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

Matt
