Man... it gave me a scare when I got TWO blue screens of death duing boot! I've never seen them there. None-the-less... it booted, but it didn't solve the problem with the Xircom modem. I'm guessing that msgsrv32.exe is only laterally involved here. When I insert the modem after boot, the mouse pointer freezes for 10 seconds, but nothing is activated by clicking until after about a minute. I can ctrl-alt-del and 'end task' on msgserv32.exe which gets the mouse working faster. But I notice that msgsrv32 disappears from the ctrl-alt-del menu anyway after 60 seconds. But the problems don't stop there. Even with most of the system operating fine after 60 seconds or so, I can't insert or removes any PC Cards. So there's a conflict somewhere with the Ethernet driver for the Xircom card, and PCMCIA somewhere. I think I mentioned that by disabling the Xircom ethernet driver in 'network adapters' in 'device manager', there are no such conflicts with msgsrv32 or the PC Cards. I got a poor Xircom/Intel support person today who was going to toss me over to Mircosoft to troubleshoot Windows. So I called 3COM, and got a competent guy who helped me back up the registry and remove those keys I found, the ones with the settings for the old 3COM combo modem that had an orphan setting in 'network adapters'. That setting is gone from device manager now, but the problems persist. Focus is narrowing... but I'm not quite sure where to look at this point.
