Just in case this helps anyone else,

My partitioning information ended up being

/tmp/hda1 1 1012 Win95FAT32
/tmp/hda2 1013 1017 Linux (boot)
/tmp/hda3 1029 1045 Linux swap
/tmp/hda4 1046 3648 Extended
/tmp/hda5 1046 2347 Linux
/tmp/hda6 2348 3648 Win95FAT32

1017-1029 left open for hibernation. Just over 70 Mb (I'm getting an extra
32 meg, thanks to a list member).

Still having problems with displaying Gnome and getting Linux to mount /hda6.

In /etc/fstab I have
/dev/hda1 /dosc msdos defaults 0 0
/dev/hda6 /dosd msdos defaults 0 0
C: mounts but D: fails with the error

mount: mount: wrong fs type, bad option , bad superblock on /dev/hda6
or too many mounted file systems

I've installed lilo on the MBR and boot Windows 98 and Redhat 7.2 with no
real problems. (Yet.)

regards, Perry
