First of all,

Can you tell if your cursor can move off the bottom of the screen? If so,
then you might be running in 800 x 600 mode and the gnome panel is actually
off the visible edge of the screen.

Otherwise, if your screen is properly initialized in 800x480, then you will
have to look at your X setup (not the X server itself).

Try creating a file called .xinitrc in your home directory, and writing
'gnome-session' in it. Or, you can test by manually invoking the gnome
taskbar (gnome-panel is the command, iirc).

If you still want, I have my XF86Config handy ... which version are you
using (I'm running 4.1.0, I think).
