I had a desktop HDD go south that had been riddled with MBR and FAT errors that went south for some reason when I removed it and put it in another system to test it. Never found out what happened, but people suggested I see if the manufacturer had a test/repair utility. But no matter what I did, the drive just would not be recognized by any system's BIOS. It woulod seem reasonable that you first have to get the drive recognized in some system before you can do any testing on it.
