An ISO image is a single file which contains *all* the data on the CD, 
including the directory structures and TOC and whathaveyou. When you copy an 
ISO, it's copied bit-for-bit instead of treating it as a file, so when the 
CD is read, all the file structures appear as normal.

Booting from the installation CD is easiest - it's how they expect you to do 
it so everything is set up that way. Stuffing the CD onto a dos partition 
and running with a floppy is quickest because the HD is the fastest data 
store on the system.

If you really want to get exotic, you can download an ISO image, mount it as 
a loopback device, which lets you see the contents, copy the contents to the 
HD, and run an installation from there. Never need to see a CD :)
