I've done this with 3 (and counting) PA2503 battery casings and three new
PA2498U batteries. The PA2498U cells all measured about 0.10" (~2.5mm)
larger in diameter than the PA2503 cells they replaced, so some judicious
Dremel work was performed on the small pads and bridges within the PA2503
case, to get it to close properly over the larger cells. Put everything back
together with Shoe Goo as battery-to-case adhesive and a little fast-set
epoxy for the seam. In the 2498s Toshiba used a black resilient goop to
adhere the batteries to the case interior, presumably to prevent their
shifting around. Shoe Goo works very well, silicone caulk is probably as
good. In the PA2503Us Toshiba used double-sided tape for this. Be careful
splitting the case, the seam edges are easily mangled.

These home-brew batt packs appear to function perfectly. As Konrad says,
they charge from the charger fine, and I've run one in the L100CT for over 4
hours, with light activity. Both Tosh Power Saver and W98 Power Management
show the battery status correctly.

There was a seller on ebay who was offering new, boxed PA2498Us for $5.00
starting bid. I was lucky enough to buy three for a total price of $36.
Unfortunately, this guy's been kicked off ebay.

Considering the price of even used PA2503s, this shade-tree re-assembly work
is worth the effort.
