I have a similar problem with a combo modem on my L70 that's probably a different issue. Does W98 SE fully boot for you with the drive inserted? My problem is that if I boot W98 (not SE) with the modem inserted, the whole system powers off halfway through the boot process. Funny... if I remove the HDD, put in in my L50, and insert the modem, it boots fine.
