Subject: network modem combo

My ancient psion dacom gold card finally gave up the ghost - it's been
flakey for a while - so I had to chase a replacement this weekend.

Ended up with a Linksys PCMLM56 combo: 10/100 network and 56k modem. It's
seen by Mandrake linux 7.1 as soon as it's plugged in, and even the W98
install went without a hitch (and to my amusement, even though there's a
warning in the manual that they don't support linux, there's a Turbolinux CD
in the pack!

It's not the cheapest - cost me 58 inc vat from Morgan Computers, and Dabs
and Simply both have equivalents starting at about 40 - but the big
advantage to me is that it doesn't have soap-on-a-rope dongles. There's a
bulge on the end with the network and phone connectors, and activity lights
(count 'em - six!) so you can see what's going on.

Recommended.

(and yes, I know 100M is a bit pointless on a 16 bit card, but it means it
talks to any network :)

Neil
