I posted this same problem for my 50CT (Winamp, choppy and broken) a couple of years ago and got several helpful replies. I think the biggest factor for me (98Lite w/ 32M RAM) was that I almost always had a network card in the machine even when I wasn't connected, so windows was doing a lot of polling to detect the state of my network. When I took the card out (or connected to a network) it got a lot better, although I think it's still set to 8 bit, mono in case I actually want to move the mouse while playing a song (good thing I don't have a good ear for music!)
