No, the BIOS handles the HDD space reservation in <=8GB HDDs, *but* the HDD must be partitioned and formatted in the Lib for this process to take place automatically. If the previous owner didn't do this (partition & format in the Lib), hibernation may write info to random location(s) on the HDD, with high probability of data corruption. There are ways to check if hibernation data is written to the proper area, but given that you will be upgrading the BIOS too, you may want to consider: 1. flashing the BIOS to 7.3 or 8.1, 2. partitioning and formatting the HDD in the Lib, 3. reinstalling W98 and configuring Tosh utilities. Of course this requires a CD drive with DOS drivers available, or the capability to mount the Tosh HDD in a desktop and copy the W98 CD to the HDD. On the other hand, when I got my HDD-less L100, I bought a refurbished 6GB HDD which came (unbeknownst to me) pre-loaded with W95. As a Libretto rookie, I was ignorant of many dos and don'ts, so I just loaded Partition Magic and partitioned the drive, assuming that the BIOS would take care of the hibernation space. While I never positively confirmed that it did, it appeared to. I ran that configuration for about a year with zero problems, then installed a 20GB HDD and did everything the right way. > > Any other special things to set up in the BIOS window? Sorry, I just want to > make sure I get this right before I dive in. There are BIOS-controlled parameters like PCMCIA slot mode, boot priority, etc. that must be set by the user. As the Lib boots, hold down the Esc key, then hit F1 when prompted. You can then view the various choices. Usually the defaults are appropriate, but with W98 you can take advantage of Cardbus, so that may be a change to consider if it's not already set up for Cardbus or Autoselect. Note that if you change the PCMCIA mode to Cardbus or Autoselect from PCIC, it is mandatory to have previously copied the W98 cab files to a directory on the HDD. Once you change the PCMCIA mode and boot, the PCMCIA slots will be unavailable until W98 updates the system configuration, for which it needs the install CD, which it can't see because the slots are unavailable.....so having the cab files on the HDD is a must. > Thanks, Mark Sorry for the long-windedness.
