 Oversized?

Hey David,

Wow... that was fast. The film arrived today. Your cutting job looks
pretty good. Without trimming the piece you've sent me, there will be about
.5mm around the edge that should overlap the edged of the screen nicely
without running into the metal frame. That should give a good starting
point to grab onto if for some reason one should want to remove the film.

I have a warning/suggestion for anyone who may first want to apply a test
patch before application of the full-sized film as I just did.

(Those who tire of my prattle quickly can jump to the last paragraph from
here.)

I was to see just how much light would be blocked with the film applied.
Putting a piece of the film right against the screen without removing the
protective plastic on each side of the film results in a substantially
dimmed screen. So I went ahead and removed the protective skin from both
sides of a test piece, and only intended to press the left side down enough
to see what the difference of brightness was going to be.

To my surprise, I couldn’t really detect any substantial dimming of the
screen to speak of. Additionally, the glossy reflective property of the
surface disappears when the film is gently pressed one, and the adhesive
properly bonds.

But without having pressed on the right edge of the test patch, somehow it
got well fastened on its own. I couldn’t get my fingernails under any of
the edges, and a fairly stiff and thin piece of plastic I had sitting around
couldn’t get under any of the edges or corners of the patch. I’d put the
patch right in the middle of the screen along the edge of a white/grey
window frame.

Ever have a recurrent ‘fear’... well, not really a fear, but an idea that
pops into your mind about something that would be freaky to have happen.
For me, that was having the point of my Swiss army knife go through the
screen of the Libretto. Don’t know why that thought pops into my mind once
in a while, even though my knife is always put away.

Well, I couldn’t think of any ideas better than using the scalpel-like edge
of the Swiss army knife, with its rounded tip up out of the way, to get
underneath the test patch. Sure enough, it got underneath and grabbed the
corner. So I pulled gently, slowly and evenly, basically straight up from
the edge to pull the film off as David recommended. I >could< see the LCD’s
own plastic coating pulling outwards too during the process, but it snapped
back nicely when the patch came off.

So my recommendation (which might be obvious for a lot of people), would be
to re-insert a little of the protective plastic skin under one of the edge
of the sticky side of a test patch before applying it. That’d make it a lot
easier to get hold of the edge of the film in order to remove it.
