Subject: HP M820E CD-R/RW repair
David,
I've finally opened up this HP M820E CD-R/RW drive to see how the process of
lubricating it will go (see your instructions below). If you recall, it
reads well. But when writing, it reports errors, fails, and aborts the
process.
First, that metal tape may be history. I salvaged a couple long pieces. I
wonder how necessary it may be to actually use foil adhesive tape, or if I
have anything to use in its place.
Then, when I pulled the top cover off, I found that there were no screws at
all holding down the laser & electronics to the base! I have a photo with
arrows showing where the mounting screws 'are'/'may be' missing:

I wonder if this may have been the whole problem.
Proceeding with disassembly, I didn't really find many screws on the laser &
drive assembly as you suggested. Just two very tiny ones on top of the unit
that I don't have a small enough screwdriver to remove:

However after peeling the metal tape from the edge, the bottom plate came
off after working a two 'hooks' on it that extended up the side and over the
top plate on one end of the unit. There were 2-3 similar hooks on the other
end that went into the space between the lid and the body. So with the
bottom removed, it looks like this:

Now I guess I'll have to go out and get a smaller screwdriver for those two
tiny screws on the top. And it was Valvoline spary synthetic lubricant you
recommended I pick up at Autozone.
Matt
Arrgggg... HotBox.ru is not letting me access my files via ftp, and they've
removed the menu item on my email page that took me to my website
configurations... Well, that was fun while it lasted.

Unscrew all of the bottom ones.
top and bottom parts slip apart and you have the base unit to work on.
a few screws will detach the laser & electronics from the base
then, cut/peel the tape around the laser head metal shielding to remove
that after unscrweing a few more screws.
now, protective shielding comes off and you have full access to the laser
head and drive rails.
lubricate, rotate gear wheel by hand to get the head to move full travel a
few times, clean off rails as needed.
reassemble, then CDSpeed2000 a few runs through Random Seek times tests to
get the lubricant everywhere.
