Now I just gotta find someone with an idea where some nice hiking > spots > are in Los Angeles for a weekend day trip to test this baby ;) > > d =) > David, I'm using a Garmin Etrex Venture handheld GPS receiver, a combination serial/DC-power cable (runs the Etrex off auto DC, transmits Etrex signal to Libretto), DeLorme Street Atlas v8.0, and a 100CT w/auto adapter and PCMCIA/serial card. Street Atlas is very powerful and while I am not sure of the screen update frequency, I haven't overshot it at 80mph or less. Of particular coolness is the voice navigation feature. I know all the GPS-equipped cars have this, but it's just fun to have your Libretto tell you where and when to turn! The downside of all this is a LOT of cables and crap on the seat and dash. Upside is it's nice to have a separate GPS for that hiking you mentioned. Anke Otto, a Lib-lister, uses an Etrex and Fugawi GPS software, which is fairly sophisticated - maybe she'll post a description of that. Regarding the screen orientation, I believe all the major GPS and trip software orients north to the top of the screen. But the handheld GPS receivers, in Navigate mode, will display the direction heading superimposed on a compass. So that, in combination with the map display on the properly refreshed Libretto screen, gives all the information. Maybe not in the most concise format, though...
