Subject: Re: [LIB] Toshiba MK4018GAS 40GB HDD

Colin,

I wonder if you're still reading the list. (Actually I'm wondering if the majority of the Librettoratti have jumped ship at this point.)
I do. :)

I'm considering getting one of these Toshiba MK4018GAS 40GB HDDs, as I see them for sale on Pricewatch for as little as $112USD now with shipping.
Well, I haven't been using it that much. I use my 110ct everyday, and my work is too critical, so I kept the original HD. But I just bought on eBay a very nice 100ct 'with loads of extras', which I will receive tomorrow, and will be dedicated to tests, fun... I guess I'll use the 40GB then.

The eBay auction was by the way :
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3403704588
Any comments on the 'extras' are welcome:
1. Actiontec PCMCIA 56K V90 Fax/Modem
2. Belkin PCMCIA USB Busport Mobile
3. Armacom PCMCIA 24x CDROM Drive
4. Armacom PCMCIA ZIP100 drive
I did bid very quickly, and didn't have the time to check if it is good stuff, if there is some DOS drivers for the CD-Rom...

Could you or someone else report back on the performance of this drive as compared with similar drives available at this point. I'm a huge fan of most anything Toshiba builds, and the drives of theirs I've owned have been fantastic
This drive has some 'fluid system'. It's eventually very silent (I have some noisy IBMs...). It got hot when I installed things, or backup stuff on it, but I haven't tested it enough to say how it's like on a normal use.

C.

Thanks,

Matt

Oh.. The overclocking of the L100 to 266MHz went like a charm. The system is so responsive at this point that I could actually be tempted back to W98, or maybe go with W2k if I find WXP a bit too sluggish.

hi.

I'm still looking for a 'quiet' bigger drive (I still have the std 600M
(was it?) in there). I did swap a 6G 9mm drive for a 2G 8.4mm but it is
too noisy (for me) so I didn't use it. (I sometimes take the Libby
camping .. well I take the family as well but the Libby is part of the
family .. <g> and the big drive could be hard halfway down the campsite,
whereas the std one was pretty silent?)

The new Toshiba serie is great. Quite hot drives, but silent.
I bought this one on eBay one month ago : 40GB 2.5" Super Slimline (9.5mm) HDD - MK4018GAS (HDD2170)

Here are more details :
    * 40GB capacity
    * Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motor drive
    * 9.5mm High
    * 12ms Average Seek Time
    * ATA-5 Interface
    * 100MB/sec  Transfer Rate
    * 2,048KB Buffer
    * 300,000 MTTF Hours

I eventually payed it 79.00.
