Subject: IR Speed

Hi,

It is in fact truth that the maximum speed that one can get with an IR
connection (or a cable connection for that matter) with a cellular phone
(mobile for those from the UK) on a GSM network is 9600. The
restriction is not an IR restriction, rather it is a GSM restriction.
On some more sophisticated GSM networks (such as MTN in South Africa)
one can make data connections using HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched
Data) at up to 43.3kbps with most Nokia phones (6310i, 9210i etc.) and
28.8 Kbps with Sony Ericssons (e.g. T300, T68i). As for GPRS data
connections, that is quite a different matter, there one can
theoretically get much higher connection speeds.

I have used both my T68i and Nokia 9210 successfully with my over
clocked Toshiba Libretto 100CT. In fact at one stage, before GPRS went
'live' (or at least publicly live) in South Africa it was free! So, I
used to leave my Libretto permanently connected to the internet via my
T68i and Bluetooth connection (using a Nokia Bluetooth connectivity CF
card in a CF sleeve). Although speed was not as good as a landline
modem, it was great to be permanently connected wirelessly (well,
almost... Since Bluetooth can hardly be considered true wireless
technology because of it's range etc.) for free! I did also connect via
IR in both Windows XP and 98.

Regards,

Dion
