Well, I guess i never noticed when I had the drive in if it was on or not. I dropped it in, did an install, windows worked fine, and then I pulled and wiped it to give to my friend who was returning to Japan in an external enclosure. Speaking of which, www.pcmicrostore.com for the CoolMax 2.5" aluminum combo, firewire only, or usb only enclosures for <$35 eg. http://pcmicrostore.com/part-detail.asp?id=409383 (this is one of three models they carry). Very nice! and they work great. recommended that you spray the outer casing with clear coat paint before use in order to protect and prevent the bare aluminum surface from turning black due to oxidizaiton (or any other color you want if you mask and spray). Anyways, was thinking of buying another one for another external exclosure for myself...but been looking at big laptop replacements for the desktop pc instead. eg. eMachines m5310 at bestbuy.com has a very nice, clear, crisp display that beats the other wide-screen I wasn considering, the Compaq X1000.
