I do wonder if your poor little L70 is going to survive with a 4200RPM drive in it, both from a power and from a heat perspective (and remember, heat tends to kill hard drives as well) ... granted it probably gets a little hotter round here than where you are (or does it?) but I used to have all sorts of heat problems with my L50 and the 20 gig Fujitsu ...
Hmmm... I archived a post to the list by Colin Verot from Mon, 24 Feb 2003 where he said he'd just installed one of these to his Libby... but he didn't say what model. I'd >like< to install it on my L100, but I haven't dealt with underclocking it from 266 yet, and I'd guess at 233 it'd still have heat problems with the drive. May just look for a L110 at some point.
Has anyone else had any experience with these, or know how well Hitachi is making the Travelstars these daze? Or will I be returning yet another Hitachi/IBM in a year from now?
*shrug* I've gotten to the stage where I'm resigned to pot luck on these things ...
I'm coming to the same conclusion trying to find a modem for e friend's desktop that will connect reliably via Win DUN at 4K or better. We've tried 3 modems in it from Fry's hee in S CA, and none connect as well as a 2 year old modem (unavailable now) I pulled from my desktop system.
I know people who swear by Quantum hard drives yet I've personally seen 5 die and heard of at least another 20 from close associates, I've yet to have or see a Maxtor or Western Digital die yet I've got associates who say they're complete junk ... until the 75GXP problem neither myself nor my associates ever had a problem with IBM drives yet even the replacement set of drives IBM sent me are showing signs of dying ...
I guess you're right Raymond... But when did IBM pawn off it's HDD manufacturing to Hitachi? Just before that 75GXP problem? Or does Hitachi have a better track record with the Travelstars? Does the 75GXP thing just apply to desktop HDDs?
The idea of a 4MB or 8MB, or better, an 8GB ;-P buffer sounds really appealing. But as the ranks here seem to have thinned substantially in the past year or more, maybe I ought to post these questions elsewhere.
Matt
