Yamaha OPL3-SAx WDM sound driver installed from l110snd9.exe from
www.csd.toshiba.com on my L110 under win98se.

Huh... I tried installing the drivers from l110snd9.exe on the L100 after deleting present ones, rebooting, Windows finding new hardware, and navigating to the extracted files. But I still got the 'Yahaha OPL3-SAx Sound System' setting in DM, not 'OPL3-SAx WDM'. Maybe due to the differences between the L100 and L110 and the drivers, and/or what Windows is deciding is compatible.

Can't remember if running the setup.exe in l110snd9.exe resulted in 'OPL3-SAx WDM' in DM I think not. As I recall, it just left out the 'x' in OPL3-SAx, and was set up as: 'Yahaha OPL3-SA Sound System' for some reason. I'm also left with 2 sets of orphans in DM from 2 attempts to install like that, 'FM Synthesizer' and 'MPU-401' that I can't get rid of as they complain they're part of a multifunction device that's not there.

My L110, .......... Winamp 2.78

Have you taken a look at the newer 2.91 version of Winamp David? The added library really makes it for me... along with the fact the Winamp2 series in general needs so little CPU resources compared to all the new MP3 players that have popped up.

, 128kbps MP3s,
online through 3Com Combo Type III ethernet/modem card (blue) with download of
virus scanner update at 28.8kbps connection, mozilla 1.5 running web browser
and email windows at the same time, zone alarm 2.6.362 free, and not a hitch
for dozens of minutes while downloading, surfing and playing MP3s at the same
time.

Let me back up:

My L110,

Stock: L110 = 233MHz ... L100 = 166MHz ... This L100 just never liked being overclocked. I just >have< to go to a L110 or a L110 MB. Saw one go by on EBay with >nothing< but the notebook w/32MB RAM upgrade & nothing else for $250. I thought it was gettng too high for me when it went over $200, as the battery hadn't been tested.

Winamp is configured to output through DirectSound output plugin (one of the
two defaults included).

I've seen lots of mention of DirectSound, and have wondered what it's all about.

If I open up a big application like Macromedia Dreamweaver or what not that
takes up lots of RAM (more than the Libretto has), it'll do a little little
skip, sounds like a pop or spark ala old records, but other than that, I'm
typing as I listen and it just goes and goes w/o a skip.

With the L100 and Winamp's priority set to high now, launching apps and starting up functions within them is the only time now when Winamp will pop or drop out for a moment. I can even run Winamp 2.91 on the L70 with a bunch of apps running, and as long as I'm just typing, it'll play back evenly. Winamp on the L70 will even playback pretty well while web surfing with 4-5 IE windows. But everything happens very slowly. The L100 moves a bit faster, but was better at 266MHz until it went into its frequent meltdowns.

Funny how 98SE crashed every day for me the 1st month or two, and now seems to be settling in a bit better with fewer lockups. Am still tempted to try out W2K on a L110 for the stability factor and power, but wonder if I'll run into resource problems running Winamp2.

A couple other notes on Winamp. The plugin I'me really in love with is Replaygain. I had to run it on my library of MP3s from a coupy of Winamp on a newer desktop networked to the Libby, as scanning from the Lib was only going at 2x, which would have taken days. But it's great having the relative playback volumes from track to track evened out so nicely. Unfortunately the L70 doesn't have the power to run Replaygain. Another nice plugin is the gapless one that eliminates the pauses inserted by MP3 players in between CD tracks that arew supposed flow from one to the next without pause.

Matt
