Subject: recompiling the kernel in slackware

hello

I am have trouble recompiling the kernel in Slackware 9.0 which uses the
linux kernel 2.4.20 on my Libretto 100CT. I installed the base 'a' package
plus the required compiler and other packages mentioned in the install doc
plus all the required packages for for ncurses but I cannot compile makdev
or start menuconfig. Makdev alwys stops with an error and menuconfig tells
me I do not have ncurses installed. If I use config that works however
when I try to compile I have to tell make to ignore errors (becuase makdev
does not work) and it goes through the enitre compile until it needs to
save the recompiled kernel then it stoips and says there is rule to save
where to save the kernel in Rules.txt. Does anyone have a clue of what is
wrong? I am very new to linux and don't know what all the dependencies are
needed so any suggestions would be very helpful.

john
