You can also d/ld WinImage, use it to extract the relevant drivers and
CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT to a formatted boot floppy (i.e., floppy
including system files).

‘WinImage’ … I did? USBBoot.zip contains Dosboot.img, rawritre2.exe and readme.txt. I assumed rawrite2.exe would install the image to a FD.

Oops… My dyslexia got to me there Philip, seeing only “You also d/ld WinImage” of your full quote, “You can also d/ld WinImage”.

Therefore Addonics made a boot floppy allowing one to boot DOS from
floppy, initialize the USB ports from that DOS and be able to use the
USB ports…..

So once again, just try this thing too if you want. If it fails, nothing is lost except some of your time.

Rawrite2.exe copied the image file USBBoot.zip over to a floppy resulting with these files being extracted:

AUTOEXEC.BAT
COMMAND.COM
CONFIG .SYS
DIR.TXT
DUSE.EXE
DUSELDR.COM
MSCDEX .EXE
XCOPY.EXE
XCOPY32 .EXE
XCOPY32 .MOD

AUTOEXEC.BAT only contains one line for loading MSCDEX for a USB CD-ROM drive:

MSCDEX /D:USBCDROM /M:15 /L:R

CONFIG .SYS only loads DUSE.EXE which executes some common CONFIG.SYS commands:

DEVICE=DUSE.EXE

Booting the L100 from the floppy with the ZIO! CF reader plugged into the USB port gets the following DOS report:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DUSE version 4.3 Build 58 Release (General)
DOS USB Stack Driver with USB Storage Extensions
Copyright….

OHCI USB Controller initialized (BASE 0xd1000, IRQ 11)

USB CD-ROM support enabled
    CD-ROM: <Not Installed>

USB Drive support enabled
    Drive D: <Not Installed>

A:\ MSCDEX /D:USBCDROM /M:15 /L:R
Device driver not found: ‘USBCDROM’
No valid CDROM device drivers selected
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That last line seems to point to a clue. If I had a USB CD-ROM attached, would it then require a USB driver for the specific USB CD-ROM to have been added to the startup files? I’m still wondering if I may need a specific driver for this ZIO!, or maybe one of those Panasonic drivers.

Getting back to Xin’s successful setup, he does mention successfully using the Panasonic USB driver KXLRW31AN.EXE from the Panasonic KXL-RW31AN CD-R/RW drive. But he doesn’t say just how he set that file up to load at boot. There’s not further mention of it on that page:

http://www.fixup.net/tips/usbdos/index.htm

I’m a bit wary about executing any of the driver files kxlcb35an.exe, kxlrw31an.exe, and kxlrw40an.exe that I downloaded from the Panasonic website that you pointed me to Philip:

http://panasonic.co.jp/pcc/products/drive/cdrrw/kxlrw31an/download.html

Wary because I’ve run exe files for drivers before, and instead of just extracting files from a compressed archive, the executable actually installed the files to the Windows operating system complete with registry entries. Maybe I can try it on an old HDD.

But from Xin’s notes, it does look like I may have to set up one of those Panasonic files in order to get USB in DOS. But again, how did he set the file up? Did he neglect to show it in his config.sys as something like, ‘device= KXLRW31AN.EXE’?

Even the theinquirer.net information doesn’t mention anything about loading those drivers:

http://theinquirer.net/?article=10215

I guess you need to find a way to boot Windows on your Libretto. As from
your other posts I inferred that you already saved the data from the
other two partitions, maybe you should just reinstall a bare Windows on
C: without it touching the partitioning scheme (under EZ-drive). With a
little luck and playing around with the tools suggested by many other
people who posted replies you might be able to access the fubarred
partition again.

That would have wiped out the data on the existing C: partition.

I should have pointed out there that I don’t want to overwrite any data on the drive. I have now backed up all of the data. The last drive E: took some hunting down amongst the 33 odd logical drives reported. But now I can go ahead and play with methods of fixing the errors in the partition tables and see if it’s possible to get the drive working has it had been before that 1st problem with Ghost. I’d also like to know what Ghost did to set things off in the 1st place.
