No, CD-Rom drivers are not needed if it a Sony CD-ROM (PCGA-CD50/51/51A) or one of the newer CD-DVD-ROM.

Okay... great...

To get into the Bios, power up and keep tapping F2 go to> boot > CD rom Bios only has about 6 setting you can adjust?

Bueno... Thanks.

I'm attach the Vaio 505F PDF User Guide
it might not go thru. its 7.4 mb

No... after a few viruses came through a year or two back, Dan set the server to block attachments. But thanks.... I did find it on the Sony support website... scanned from the original paper document reather crudely too I might add... but still useful.

Thanks for the feedback on this.

Matt

I have a Vaio 505F too,
If, the Bios doesnt detect the HD, or you get no OS detect,
most of the time it a bad Hard Drive.

Hmmm....

You can boot with a Windows OS disk if you have a Sony CD-ROM

It >does< have a Sony CD-ROM... I really don't think it has the DVD-ROM drive I've seen in specs on the net for the system. Does your Sony CD-ROM not need DOS specific drivers to be seen and boot a CD? and/or can it be seen when booted from a W98 boot floppy that enables CD-ROM support? I guess I'll find out... but it wouold be nice to be prepared.

(there is also another non-Sony CD-ROM that would also boot, But I dont remember the brand?)
Make sure you go into the Bios and make the CD-ROM the First booting Device.

Okay... how do you access BIOS?

If, you can only get the computer to see the CD-ROM, but not to boot? just copy the win98 cabs files to Hard Drive,
then run setup.

Yeah... if I can access the CD-ROM from DOS, either via a bootable CD or FD, I'll be set.
