an RBL for forum users is a great idea!! If we could get all the various forum softwares to interact and save to a common list, we could clean up the spam problem in no time.
just, let's not use spamhaus. :-)
If you want a copy of my changes, Hugh, they're yours for the asking. The changes are really simple, and you could add your own question/answer pairs pretty easily. I'm planning a more secure version once I have time to sit down and really look at it. Ideally, I'd love to create my own forum software, with my own ideas. I'd like to have more dynamic threading, better spam control, and integrate user blogs and secure e-mail as part of the system.
Hmm.... I smell a senior project idea coming on. :-) I'll have to ask the other guys in my class what they think.

Did some cleaning...
Random thoughts on phpbb:
- a fast way to clean is from mysql commandline "delete from phpbb_users where user_website like '%viagra%';' etc
- it could be interesting to add a function to the registration website to block a list of websites or patterns, eg just hard-coded into an array; this gets around security-by-obscurity issues so could be merged with the main phpbb codebase. It's also how mediawiki works (pretty much zero-spam with this in place), and I guess we could use mediawiki's blacklist?
