I don't see this as a problem.  With my usage on the Mac, I could not tell
which version was installed, so I built and shipped my own copy of 1.0.6
that lived in the same directory as my executable.  Problem solved.

You can't trust that the version that is installed on a given OS is the one
you want - if you rely on features of 1.0.10, or rely on bug fixes in
1.0.10, you are stuck with shipping your own version anyway, whether you
static link to it or load it dynamically.
