There exists a hotplug branch of libusb (or more precisely libusb-pbatard which is the personal branch of libusb I maintained there), based on a Linux and OS-X patch that was sent by Nokia, more than 2 years ago, to add hotplug support. Please have a look at http://git.libusb.org/?p=libusb-pbatard.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/hp;js=1 That branch hasn't seen updates for a very long time, and hasn't received much testing, so it probably needs a few fixes to be usable. However, if you need hotplug for Linux, you may find that much of the work of providing a hotplug feature to libusb/libusbx has already been done, and that if you can upgrade the branch to bring the changes that have been applied to libusb/libusbx in the meantime, you could have a workable solution. I also have plans to do the work highlighted above, to bring an updated version of that branch as a potential proposal for hotplug support to libusbx 2.0, but due to time constraints, it's unlikely that this will happen anytime soon. But if you want to help the upcoming libusbx effort to add hotplug, as well as solve your issue of providing libusbx hotplug support on Linux, I would say that spending time to bring that branch up to speed with the latest libusbx may help both yourself and the libusbx project.
