Peter Stuge is the admin of the libusb project. This is libusbx project which is a fork of libusb project. HID backend is added to libusbx because there are many generic HID device and Pete has got the code long time ago before the fork. I am one of the admins of libusbx and I do not see the need to add USB Mass Storage backend.
