Once the user has been added to the group, it's very easy to "upgrade"
a running shell to use the new gid:

exec su "${USER}"

(What it does is of course to *replace* the current shell with a new
shell, but beyond command line history not neccessarily making it
"across" the difference is not very noticeable.)
