Yep its not really a LWP problem cause the whole thing is handled by
crypt::ssleay.
See the the docs and test_script provided with crypt::ssleay. We use LWP
with 
168 Bit (TdES) ciphers and it works.

It might be a handshake failure:
Override the SSLVersion to 3 instead of 23 which is used per default. (Again
refer to the 
SSLeay test_script)

make sure
* latest openssl installed
* latest LWP installed
* latest Crypt::SSLeay installed
