That href isn't going to work. I assume you altered it a bit since ftp.thesite.com doesn't resolve but you should really 100% verify that the actual URI you really have there does open in a browser. I have discovered that pubmed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi) actually appears to return a 500 error when you give it a bogus set of options - could it be that you have the same problem?
