It is worth noting that the distribution notes for ncompress read as
follows:

    It is not even clear if anyone can "own" 'compress', since original
    developer Spencer Thomas, myself, and others placed the code in the
    public domain long before the adoption of the Berne copyright
    convention.

Of course, this is simply an amusing anecdote, and not entirely
relevant to the thread.
