I will try this out on Monday.

I got it to work properly, here's what I did:

The first time (this didn't work), from the official AIM client I used the 
'add buddy' feature and typed in my UIN.  This put my UIN in the offline list 
and there I was stuck.

The second time, after deleting my ICQ contact from the AIM list, I sent an 
AIM message to my AIM acct from licq.  This makes AIM pop up a chat window 
even though I'm not on that buddy list.  Then I clicked that chat window's 
"add buddy" button and it worked.  My UIN was not shown in the contact list, 
instead my username was shown, and it was put in the online buddies section.  
So now it appears to work fine.
