I found out that the problem with XScreenSaver extensions also exists in 
Debian (I use Xandros which is a Debian derivative) and I fixed the problem 
by installing libxss-dev from Debian unstable.  Apparently there is a bug in 
the Debian "unstable" glibc 2.0 which broke Xandros Networks when I installed 
libxss-dev. Xandros Networks is the package updater in Xandros.  I can still 
use apt-get so it is not a reason to reinstall Linux.  I am not going to try 
this on the machine that I usually use, until glibc 2.0 is fixed.
