i have the felling that the server side list support has something to do with
this.

Every time that a user is recived from the server contact list, its alias is
updated. that is a nice behavior if you change the alias while you are online.

what happens if you disable the Contact Server Side Support writing down a 0
to the the UseSS key at the file ~/.licq/licq.conf ?
