"Problem" gone now. After a good night's sleep I just repeated your steps exactly as in the tutorial (only adding the 'cd todo' before the first 'mvn jetty:run' as already mentioned) and this everything worked fine.
I'm new to Maven and I was trying it out on various projects from other (older) /lift/ tutorials as well, so the wires must've gotten crossed somewhere.
