sorry, I just see that my mail of yesterday didn't make it here. so:
make check fails for me only with -j 4, but I never do that; plain make
check worked OK and works just now. I also never make check with a debug
version.
to sum it up: I really don't know how to help that issue move along. I
start redoing the regtest changes per Keith's suggestion, but then...
if it helps anyone, I have stock Lubuntu 12.4 amd64, including g++-4.6.3.
