I confirm that the current Lilypond makes this workaround unnecessary:

The current Lilypond would play the first chord with the softer electric
piano even with that patch reverted. Lilypond 2.14.2 would use the
standard acoustic piano for the first chord.
I wanted to report the problem, but it was very hard to reduce the test
case to a manageable size.
Thank you for fixing another MIDI bug!
