Ugh, tons of e-mails I wrote over the past few days didn't go through and
patches didn't get posted (travelling)...people may get stuff delayed by a
few days. Sorry about that.
For this patch, I'm going to push it to staging just because Keith's
comments are addressed and it is a blocker for a lot of work I can get done
today. I'll put a fat commit message.
