Workaround: \override Accidental #'horizontal-skylines = #'()
Either the patch or the workaround *do* let the fingering come closer to
the notes if the fingering *completely* clears the accidental. From the
mailing list discussion, it seems this is the desired behavior.
I still have not seen evidence supporting the desire for perfectly aligned
fingering. The only example I found was Beethoven Op2 No2, Schenker
edition.
