The patch *does*, in fact, give the desired output for the exact input at
the head of this tracker item.
The discussion on Reitveld is troubled by a regression test added in the
patch, which checks that the patch *also* works for TextSpanners. For
confusing reasons another override has always been needed for TextSpanners
and other items

is sad, but not essential to this bug about Hairpins.
