In what cases would laissezVibrer ties' height vary ?
Ties curve up or down, depending on the stem direction, and that shifts
their Y-extent. To notice the difference, you can change the pitches in
the example above, so that the stem would be down if alone, but points up
to meet the beam.

I suspect that my confusion was based on a bad assumption: the stencil
might be created several times, using a tentative direction during
note-spacing, with only the preliminary staff-spacing step locking the
direction into place. If we say the ties are 'cross-staff' that preliminary
staff-spacing step will skip them.
