Interestingly, despite great results shown in comment 6, this patch doesn't
solve the original problem. Attached is my test file, and here are pdfs
and screenshots of how these pdfs render in Frescobaldi's pdf preview and
Okular. In all cases the upper snippet is the one with default stems,
which still display wrongly, and the lower snippet has stems overridden to
lines, which always render correctly.
