We could document the behavior of padding both sides. There might be a
valuable use for the former behavior, though, which lets one adjust just
one gap without affecting the others.
Probably better if I reverse the revert, next time I have Linux up, so we
regain the fix as reviewed. The patch is simple and did not, in fact,
cause issue 3432.
