So what? Are we *ever* going to improve this stuff? Or is the reluctance
related to a potential code freeze?
BTW, I've taken care to only use features available in all shells (yes, I
do read the specific sections of the autoconf info pages).
I won't continue to argue; it has already cost far too much time. Please
do whatever you want to do.
