Indeed, interpreting scaled durations _exclusively_ as scaled durations has
three advantages that I can see:
1) clarity of semantics for novice users (such as myself);
2) easy production of editions of renaissance music in either halved or
full note values, with one simple edit; and
3) potential application of diminution and augmentation of music fragments
(as in an extension of section 3.4.4 of the Learning Manual: "Saving typing
with variables and functions")
