Ok, I've read and reread the patch, and read and reread, and I'm just not
confident enough to pull it into stable/2.18 without any previous testing
exposure, even though it addresses a long-standing nuisance. Sorry for the
noise. It can progress as normal. It's still important enough for
backporting to 2.18.1.
