Thanks for that very thorough report. Makes it likely that the shell is not as issue here. Given that the script is run explicitly using sh on the command line, it would seem that /bin/sh is not necessarily involved but rather what's in PATH, so to make quite sure, one should just run
sh --version
and see the output.  But I consider it more likely that
tail --version
will unveil the culprit.  Can you check both?
